STRIPES & STRIKES wins USA SOFTBALL 18u GOLD NATIONAL QUALIFIER

                              Will head to Oklahoma City for GOLD Nationals July 26-August 1st

 

OCEAN CITY, MD – The Stripes & Strikes 18u travel softball team won a USA SOFTBALL GOLD NATIONAL QUALIFIER here this weekend, sweeping three games.  The team will play in the USA Softball GOLD National Championships July 26-August 1, 2020 in Oklahoma City’s Hall of Fame Stadium, home of the NCAA Women’s College World Series.  Below is a summary of the three games:

 

 GAME 1: WINNER’S BRACKET: Stripes & Strikes 8  Gold Coast Hurricanes, Plantation City, FL  5

     Stripes & Strikes played long ball early, as Marissa Trivelpiece got things started with a long solo home run over the rightfield fence in the first inning to give S&S a quick 1-0 lead.  In the top of the second, Kasidy Slusser drove a pitch well over the centerfield fence with the bases loaded for a grandslam,  giving Stripes & Strikes a 5-0 lead.  Gold Coast rallied to score four runs in the 3rd inning, cutting the S&S lead to 5-4.  Allie L’amoreaux drilled a 2-out RBI-single and KP Peters delivered a 2-run single two batters later to give S&S an 8-4 lead.  Sarah Tuzinski (7-0) picked up the win with relief help from L’amoreaux, who hurled two scoreless innings to earn her third save.  Maddy Kester was 2-4 with a double,  while Gianna Gombeda, Ali Keener, Victoria Fuss and Jersey-Lynn Cook each singled.  Trivelpiece & Slusser hit home runs.

 

GAME 2  WINNER’S BRACKET SEMI-FINAL:  Stripes & Strikes 9  East Coast Titans, Berlin, MD   4

     Stripes & Strikes entered the 5th inning trailing 2-0.  They rallied for 6 runs to take a 6-2 lead.  Helena Latyon lead off with a solo home run over the centerfield fence.  Consecutive walks to Sarah Tuzinski and Gianna Gombeda chased starting pitcher Cheyenne Beayon.  Relief pitcher Haley Sadler surrendered three straight singles to Marissa Trivelpiece (RBI), Allie L’amoreaux (2 RBIs) and Maddy Kester (RBI).  KP Peters followed with a sacrifice fly to deep leftfield. Ali Keener executed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt single to score pinch-runner Jersey-Lynn Cook, giving S&S a 6-2 lead. Stripes & Strikes tacked on 3 runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-2 lead.  Maddy Kester, who went 3-4, provided a 2-run single in the inning. Gombeda was 2-3 with a double and two runs scored, Layton was 2-3 with a home run.  Allie L’amoreaux drove in 3 runs with a single and sacrifice fly. Sarah Tuzinski, Marissa Trivelpiece and Ali Keener each singled.  Kasidy Slusser (12-2) scattered 8 hits,walking none and striking out 6, went the distance in the circle for the complete-game win. 

 

 

GAME 3       WINNER’S BRACKET FINAL:       Stripes & Strikes  7      Delaware Express   0

 

     Allie L’amoreaux fired a no-hitter, walking none and striking out four.  Only one batter reached base via an infield error. She helped her own cause with an RBI-single in the 3rd inning.  Stripes & Strikes started the scoring as Maddy Kester lead off the top of the second inning by launching a long solo home run, well over the leftfield fence.  S&S plated two more runs in the 3rd inning.  Helena Layton and Sarah Tuzinski lead off with walks, and were sacrificed bunted to 2nd & 3rd by Gianna Gombeda.  Marissa Trivelpiece then smashed a deep drive off the centerfield fence for an RBI-double.  L’amoreaux followed with an RBI single to put S&S ahead, 3-0.  In the 5th inning, Ali Keener lined a 2-run single to center, and later scored on an RBI-double off the bat of Layton.  Victoria Fuss and Mollie Corbett each added a single. Layton was 2-2 with a double. 

 

     The tournament was hit by heavy rains late, causing the final few games to be cancelled. Stripes & Strikes was the only undefeated team, earning them the team Championship and bid to the GOLD Nationals.  The Fredrick, MD Heartbreakers won the loser’s bracket to finish second.  Delaware Express placed third, while Tri-State Thunder finished 4th.    Helena Layton (4-6, .667) and Maddy Kester (6-11, .545) were the tournament’s leading hitters.  Each blasted a home run and double.  Stripes & Strikes (20-3) will return to action this weekend (Oct 18-20) in the Team New Jersey Fall College Showcase, playing 5 games over three days, including a game Saturday against the West Coast Selects from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  For more information, visit the team’s website at www.stripesandstrikessoftball.com
